The Throwbacks
The Throwbacks is a name meant to pay homage to all musicians. Their influences range from legends like Merle Haggard and Bob Marley, to local heroes. They bring an interesting repertoire that is wildly diverse yet is played in a unique Throwback style.
Four musicians from the Laguna Madre Area all bring their independent vibe to the original and cover music they play. Their original music is as diverse as their influences. Their first album is due to release by March, 2008 under the Dancing Monkey Record label. From the jazzy Mary’s Eyes to the ska style Grey Skies Blue, there promises to be something for everybody. Raised on the sounds of Johnny Cash and outlaw country, Wen Moore, Jr. is the vocalist and plays rhythm guitar. Studying the great guitarists like Jimmy Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn, lead guitarist Craig Greenwood handles both solos and sings. Raul Valdez, Jr. thumps out the baseline with a reggae Sublime-like attitude; he also sings. Percussionist Josh Kay brings a retro-hippie Grateful Dead flare into the mix. Ross Moore brings it all together on drums with a grunge-based, metronome-like consistency.
The Throwbacks were among the finalists at the December Rock Fest held on South Padre Island. They were the house band at Skyy High Bar on SPI, a club considered the hot spot during Spring Break 2007. They’ve frequently lent their support to awareness benefits including Save Isla Blanca Park and the Laguna Madre Humane Society. They’ve also been a favorite of motorcycle clubs during Bike Week for the last couple of years. Currently, The Throwbacks are the house band at Last Call, where they entertain every Saturday night. You can expect to hear more of them in the future.
