“On The Roadside” Allstars
The “On the Roadside” All Stars usually team up for special musical events and consist of a mix of Rio Grande Valley blues musicians, the main on the lineup being guitarist Emilio Crixell and drummer Chris Maley. The group's named after the local public radio blues show “On the Roadside” which features the best in classic & latest blues.
Emilio Crixell- vocals and guitar, started his musical journey on bass guitar at around the age of thirteen, playing with local bands, performing anywhere from dancehalls, bars, roadhouses... to concert halls all around South Texas. In 1976 he left the Rio Grande Valley to do extensive touring with the Ezra Brook Band before re-locating to California. He would eventually land in San Francisco where by 1989 he would come to realize and fulfill a long time dream. That was the year he would put the bass guitar down in exchange for a 6-string Fender stratocaster and begin a new musical life, fronting his own blues band. This led to the formation of the Texas Manglers, a rocking tex-mex flavored blues band. They went on to play in and around the S.F. Bay Area, headlining and supporting such acts as Doug Sahm, Delbert McClinton, C.J. Chenier, Malo, Chris Duarte, Lee Rocker, among others. Emilio most recently went on tour of the northeastern states with legendary blues artist Guitar Shorty. Emilio has now moved back to South Texas where you will most likely find him playing with Los Bluzanos, teaming up with legendary Austin saxaphonist, Tomas Ramirez, the "Jazzmanian Devil" and also the “On the Roadside” All Stars for special events.
Chris Maley- drums, Program Manager for KMBH/KHID radio in the Rio Grande Valley handles all of the production, public relations, and programming with the help of his radio colleagues. Chris has also helped to produce family oriented music events such as “Blues on the Hill” concert series in Harlingen, Texas and has also had the opportunity to perform with local blues musicians Joe Shull & Chill Bone, Big Brucie & The Maxtones and national and world renowned blues legends Lazy Lester and Guitar Shorty. Now in its 12th year the “On the Roadside” radio show can be heard every Saturday night 6-8pm on KMBH.
